Even if you are not familiar with the name “Shane Howard”, chances are you know his biggest hit, Solid Rock.

That song – his former band Goanna’s highest-charting track – is an Australian classic.

But 35 years after its release, Solid Rock serves as just a taste of Howard’s prolific songwriting talents and output.

Howard and his band are headlining the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival’s Main Event at Ulumbarra Theatre on Saturday, November 11.

The show is a perfect opportunity for dedicated fans of Howard and casual listeners alike to experience his vast songwriting catalogue – a collection that frequently explores universal themes in an Australian context.

Howard has forged a reputation over four decades – and 13 solo albums – as an Australian songwriter of immense power and compassion. One critic has even described him as sounding “as though he has drunk deeply from the same fountain that gave the world Henry Lawson, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan”. High praise, indeed.

This is a rare opportunity to see such a well-regarded Australian songwriter in Bendigo’s own Ulumbarra Theatre.

Fittingly, the festival’s main event will also feature the talents of inspiring songwriter and guitarist Yirrmal, Hat Fitz & Cara and Bendigo’s own rising blues star, Bill Barber.

To get people in the mood, a free pre-show pop-up gig will entertain guests in the foyer of the Ulumbarra Theatre from 5pm.

This is a night of music you will not forget.
